FRPs for Commuter Rail Improve Durability And Reliability

  • ADA Accessibility

    Retrofitting older rail stations to make them ADA-compliant and accessible to all commuters is a critical objective for commuter rail agencies. Lightweight FRP decking is used in the construction of ramps, “mini-high” platforms, and other accessible structures.

  • Subway Tunnels

    FRPs can be engineered to solve the needs of subway tunnel owners. For example, FRP shrouds were developed for the rehabilitation of the Canarsie Tunnel in New York City which was damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The FRP shrouds prevent pieces of the now-abandoned, deteriorated concrete duct benches from falling on tracks. The lightweight shrouds were pre-fabricated and rapidly installed compared to the traditional FRP strengthening products originally considered.

  • New Platform Construction

    FRP rail platforms are a long-lasting alternative to traditional precast and cast-in-place concrete platforms. Corrosion-resistant FRP rail platforms provide the greatest value in locations where severe winters force commuter rail agencies to spread salt and other de-icing chemicals.

  • Platform Rehabilitation

    FRP rail platforms are used by many commuter rail agencies to quickly replace deteriorated concrete platforms with little to no disruption to commuters. Large, lightweight FRP panels with factory installed tactile warning tiles and rub boards are supported on existing substructure. Fewer panels mean fewer joints to maintain. Slab-style or long spanning double tee style panels offer a great deal of design flexibility.
